Description of Alliance for a Viable Future Podcast
What will it take to generate critical mass for climate solutions by 2030? We believe that change flows through relationships, at the speed of trust. Therefore, the mission of Alliance for a Viable Future is to generate northeast climate leadership by sitting in circles that build the quality of trust, courage and wisdom that we need to take intelligent action, together. On this podcast, we interview change agents who are deeply committed to protecting life for our children and generations to come, and are blazing new trails with paradigm-shifting solutions that restore justice to our organizations and communities. Together, we are making the impossible possible.
1. Generating Bioregional Climate Leadership - Lev Natan
What will it take for us to generate critical mass for climate solutions before 2030 in the Northeast bioregion? Climate leadership begins with Self and ripples out into our teams and alliance-building efforts. The Alliance’s vision of a latticework of leadership circles in the Northeast bioregion is inspired by a vision that the founder, Lev Natan, saw over ten years ago; old-growth trees sprouting up out of the earth, instantly reforesting the whole planet. This vision has served as a root metaphor to see the possibility of interconnectedness in our human and living systems. On a practical level, the Iroquois Confederacy’s Native American governance structure has demonstrated what is possible, here in the Northeast - a beautiful example of how we can generate “wisdom energy,” so that our children may have a viable future.
2. Coronavirus / COVID-19: What can it teach us?
How can we respond with wisdom, courage and intelligent action to this sudden spread of this global pandemic? The more seriously we take it, the less serious it will be. In this time-sensitive podcast, we explore key principles that will allow us to navigate this situation with wisdom, courage and intelligent action. For example, form follows function. What is your function, in your family, your organization, for your clients, and how can you think creatively about designing new forms and new ways of contributing in these poignant times? What do you need to let go of, in order to embrace perspectives that will allow you to see this crisis as an opportunity to adapt, evolve and grow?
3. Leading from the Roots - Dr. Kathleen Allen
Description: How can an organization be so resilient that it can weather any storm? How can an organizational leader leave a legacy that endures long into the future? What is the most important nutrient for a regenerative, living organization? Join us for this special conversation with Dr. Kathleen Allen, author of Leading From the Roots, as we understand how she found answers to these questions (and more) from her observations of the natural world. Legacy trees, old growth forests, and ecological stages shine light onto how we can create organizations and movements that will endure and thrive in the long-term.
4. How to Apply Nature-based Principles to Organizational Leadership - Lev Natan
Description: What is the most essential ingredient in a business, organization or community? How can we learn to navigate the complex landscape of our world and be responsible, adaptable leaders? Why is it vital to be able to see with natural eyes? How do the salmon swim upstream? In this reflection on Dr. Allen’s interview in episode #2, Lev explores sunlight as a metaphor for positive energy in groups, the distinction between closed systems vs. open systems, and the “Salmon Swimming Upstream Principle,” which teaches us the efficacy of flowing with the laws of nature, within ourselves, in groups and in all living systems. Through observation, deep listening and tracking patterns, we conserve energy and generate precise action - a more tenable alternative to attempting to control living systems.
5. The Magic of CircleWork” - Jalaja Bonheim, PhD.
Description: Gathering in a circle has been a universal technology used by civilizations across the globe throughout human history to address the problems of the day. In our modern society, with increased digital connection through the cybersphere, we can benefit from this practice more than ever. There is a power that comes from the circle’s sacred shape, which brings us resilience, alignment with others, and vision for a deeper collaboration. Join us for this conversation with master CircleWork facilitator, Jalaja Bonheim, PhD about The Magic of CircleWork and why circles are so important to the work of our Alliance for a Viable Future.
6. Why we need circles for climate leadership - Lev Natan
Sitting in circles has been around since humans sat around campfires. But in the business-as-usual mindset, workplace culture tells us to get right into action, goals and results. The voice that is driving us to “get it done,” and done quickly, is the same voice that has us running around in a maze and always seeming to find our way back to the starting point, more exhausted than before. When we work in circles, we get in touch with our center, our root, our core, and our sense of sufficiency, gratitude and enoughness. From there, we open to the possibilities in our vision - where we truly want to go, both individually and collectively. Then, and only then, does intelligent, inspired, courageous and wise action emerge. Circlework allows for trust, which builds courage and wisdom, which is essential for teams to function effectively and take intelligent action in these poignant times.
